Cyclists to participate in the Bicycling The Karoo Burn 2020

The twenty-second of the second month, two thousand and twenty, marks the day where more than two hundred and twenty cyclists will be pushed to the extreme as they take on a gruelling race on the longest uninterrupted dirt road in South Africa.

Staged by Bicycling SA and Dryland Event Management, the inaugural Bicycling The Karoo Burn is an exciting and challenging 242km race with a 1950m vertical ascent on the notorious R355 that goes all the way from Calvinia in the Karoo to the fruit-farming town of Ceres.

The route

Which seems to many as a deserted open space somewhere in the middle of nowhere, reveals to others the warm heartbeat of mother earth. The arid splendour of the Karoo landscape, with the R355 disappearing over the horizon, leads you to majestic passes and reward you with breath-taking views all around. But do not let this beauty fool you into thinking you are in for an easy ride, as this route proved to be a daunting challenge to many and needs to be completed within twenty-two hours.

The route starts at the Calvinia Primary School grounds, from where riders will head out of town on the R27 before turning off onto the R355. They will then travel over the scenic Bloukrans Pass, going past the legendary AfricaBurn venue and the Tankwa Padstal. Participants will then face the toughest part of the race – the Katbakkies Pass, which offers a picturesque but brutal climb.

This is followed by a welcome reprieve as the riders descend into the Koue Bokkeveld and the route starts winding down through the Morgenster Farm, coming to an end at Kaleo Guest Farm situated outside Ceres. There will be six well-stocked water points along the route where race participants can enjoy a meal and refill their hydration packs.
